A complex of defense works protected the anti-tank ditch at the eastern tip of the Fortress of the Hook of Holland. Several bunkers were situated between the levee (Pettendijk) and the canal (Oranjekanaal) near the intersection of the roads now designated N220 and N223 (Maasdijk and Oranjesluisweg). The most interesting of these (regrettably recently demolished) was located in the Pettendijk embankment, about 100 meters southwest of the Maasdijk. This was a type 634 personnel shelter with an armored steel gun cupola with six embrasures for a pair of machine-guns. All that remains of this bunker is a small Tobruk, located near the top of the levee.
The other facilities that made up this position were arranged in a circle around a former schoolhouse (Oranjeschool). In the old days, this school served a tiny village – a few scattered houses and a church – that the Germans ruthlessly demolished. Only the school was deemed useful, and it was spared for use as accommodations and office space. This building is now used as an eel smoke house. Type 134 munitions bunkers were built in front and behind the school . A masonry food storeroom and a type 622 personnel shelter were attached to the rear of the school. A masonry mess hall was built against the Pettendijk next to the school.
This defense establishment, including the school house and the mess hall, can be visited on the site of the eel smoke house. The construction of the masonry vault of the mess hall employed both regular and flying buttresses. Walls were built between the buttresses to shield the windows from shrapnel and bullets. The two munitions bunkers in the schoolyard incorporated wall extensions near their entrances to protect against flying projectiles. The masonry food storage facility with its enormous ventilation shafts can be seen from the Pettendijk. The earth berm of this structure remains virtually intact, and the masonry vault is partly visible. The personnel shelter in the meadow is also visible from the Pettendijk vantage point. The nearby levee contains a Tobruk, which is possibly a remnant of the bunker that once housed the large armored gun cupola.
