Widerstandsnest 136H

WN 136H was located where the land front reached the coast line, near beach marker #6 at the Foreestweg (road). The complex was bordered by the anti-tank wall through the dunes. The Widerstandsnest included two type 653 casemates for 5-cm tank cannon, a light machine gun emplacement incorporated into the anti-tank wall and a second machine gun bunker on the beach. The wall in the dunes and the anti-tank ditch in the polder were linked by a Höckerhindernis, a tank obstacle in the form of a line of dragon's teeth. About eighty men formed the garrison of this 84-work complex. Weaponry included grenade launchers, a machine gun in a former tank turret mounted on a Tobruk, a 4.7-cm cannon in a similar emplacement, four pieces of light anti-aircraft artillery, ten flame throwers and a heavy machine gun. Living quarters were provided for the men, but they could seek refuge in bomb-proof shelters – a type 501 group shelter, which was probably also used as a command post, and a type 504 shelter which included room for an anti-tank gun. The complex is presumed to be largely intact and buried under the sand.
