MSB Scheveningen-Nord

In the Koningsbosch dune park north of Scheveningen, the German navy built what was appropriately named “Coastal Battery Scheveningen-Nord” (StP. XXXX ML). Its first guns were six pieces of captured French 15.5-cm artillery, installed in open emplacements. The crew was initially housed in light concrete VF-type shelters. The complex was expanded by adding six type 501 bunkers in the fall of 1942. During the first half of 1944, four casemates for heavy guns (type 671 abg. 629 – a modified type 671) were built between the old open emplacements, and new 15-cm artillery was installed. The old masonry fire control post was replaced with a large type S414 bunker that featured three decks for observation and range-finding. A type M151 bunker for the commanding officer and his staff was located about one hundred meters to the rear of the fire control post, and two large type Fl 246 ammunition bunkers were located to the north. The battery further included dozens of masonry works, e.g. living quarters, storage spaces, a dressing station, a kitchen, a bakery and latrines. For the rear defense, the complex had two pieces of anti-tank artillery set up in open emplacements, and three casemate-housed cannon (two type 671s and one type 667). The battery’s key structures were interconnected by covered trenches.

After the war, the battery stayed intact and everything looks just like it did in 1945. Some of the passageways and bunkers have been excavated.
