Marineflakbatterie ‘Nansum’

An anti-aircraft battery was built near the hamlet of Holwierde in the vicinity of Delfzijl. It was to have six bomb-proof shelters but only five were built. The battery also featured a fire control post and artillery emplacements. An M383 Einheitsmaschinenraum [equipment room] and an FL246 ammunition bunker are the only bomb-proof structures still intact. A type 661 shelter was under construction; its foundation was discovered after the war. 661 type bunkers were frequently added to Atlantic Wall complexes to be used as hospitals. Their layout was very similar to that of the type 622 group shelter. This battery, like many others in the area, was staffed by Marineflakabteilung 256. The complex included a Hochstand, a base for a FuMO 201 radar. Today, two of the bunkers of this battery still exist, giving some idea of what the war-time situation may have been like.
