During the very first days of the war, a strong point was established in the immediate vicinity of the lighthouse. Initially, this was a Stützpunktgruppe with a number of independent bunker complexes, some not much more than an assortment of gun pits. Private homes in the vicinity of the lighthouse were requisitioned for troop accommodation.

It was not until 1941 – 1942 that several Verstärkt Feldmässige bunkers, i.e. type 450a, 451b and 452b Küverbunkers, were built in the area. For ammunition storage a VF7a Munitionsunterstand [bunker] was added. From a Flugzeugwache, a guard post for sighting enemy aircraft that was located further to the north, the Luftwaffe scanned the skies day and night in search of enemy aircraft. The complex was intended to be expanded with three bombproof bunkers, slated for construction in March of 1945, but these were never actually built.

Part of the complex was demolished after the 1953 flooding disaster. Many of the bunkers had been located in the first line of dunes where they were a threat to sea walls and embankments. The lighthouse has been open to the public since 2009. From the pedestrian trail leading up the lighthouse, one can make out some concrete bunker rubble and a Tobruk.
