The ability to defend the navy home port at Den Helder and the Marsdiep were of great strategic importance. Not only was the Dutch island of Texel ideal as a sentry for the German navy fleet stationed at Den Helder, the island also had plenty of room to build coastal batteries and anti aircraft batteries.
