Stützpunkt XII M - Marineflakbatterie 'De Mok'

In the very first days of the war, the Germans expanded De Mok airfield into an anti-aircraft battery. During (and before) the mobilization, the Dutch had installed several 8.8-cm caliber anti-aircraft guns. The Germans gladly used these captured guns, later replacing them with four pieces of 10.5-cm S.K.C 32 artillery, which they installed on newly-built footers. A searchlight emplacement was located several hundred meters west of the anti-aircraft battery. The complex was occupied by the 3rd Battery Marine Flak Abteilung 808 in 1941 - 1942. On 21 April 1941, the garrison consisted of two officers, twenty NCOs and 150 enlisted men under the command of Oberleutnant Schweinitz. The battery underwent steady expansion with several troops quarters added over time.

Marine Flak Abteilung 808 commanded not only De Mok battery with its searchlight, but also the Leichte Flakbatterie Den Helder – Texel. Mammut [mammoth] and Salzhering [salty herring] radar installations were in operation day and night, on the lookout for enemy aircraft. Their data were transmitted to a (type FL250) FlaGruKoStand, also the command post of Marine Flak Abteilung 808. Verteidigungsbereich Den Helder, the complexes, its radar posts and FlaGruKoStand, cooperated closely with Stützpunktgruppe Texel. Similar Flakbatterien [AA batteries] were also present in Den Helder, e.g. Erfprinsz. en Dirksz. Admiraal.
