The ferry from the mainland docks at Oudeschild, and it did so during the war. Obviously, it was of extreme strategic importance to protect the operations of the ferry. To this end, the harbor was fortified with bunkers and barbed wire barriers. On the levee, north of the harbor, Marineflakabteilung 808 [Navy AA-section] had placed a couple of 3.7-cm anti-aircraft guns. A 3.7-cm anti-tank gun was also present.
Oudeschild also had a Grenzaufsichtsstelle or border control post staffed by the Verstärkter Grenzaufsichtsdienst [reinforced border control service] a body similar to an armed customs service.
