Stützpunkt IXa H – Heeresküstenbatterie ‘De Koog’ [army coastal battery]
The Germans built an army coastal battery at beach marker 17. Most of the bunkers were of the thin-walled kind. The weaponry was not or only barely shielded because the army did not regard the matter as high-priority. The complex fell under the command of Heeresküstenartillerieabteilung [HKAA army coastal battery section] 1230 and its radar or MarKoStand was at Stützpunktgruppe Katwijk on the mainland.
On the beach, a type 667 Kleinstschartenstand [small casemate] was built for a 5-cm Kampfwagenkanone [gun]. In March 1945, a type 677 Schartenstand 43/41 ohne Nebenräume [small casemate without additional rooms] for a 8.8-cm anti-tank gun was added.
These two bunkers plus the surrounding minefield were designed to prevent a breakthrough of enemy troops towards the hinterland.
Discussions about moving the battery to another location on Texel date from 1942; the battery did not perform as expected. Its field of fire was too limited to successfully cover the north of the island. Ultimately, the battery was moved to the Ongeren neighborhood in August of 1944. An additional advantage of the Ongeren location was that the harbor at De Cocksdorp was now within range.
