The German army built a headquarters for an artillery regiment in the steep inner dunes at De Klip. It included a command bunker (type 608) for the commanding officer. Ordinarily, he and his men slept in masonry living quarters but in times of danger, they could seek refuge in three personnel shelters (type 502, 621 and 622). A masonry passageway connected the command bunker with a dune top observation post and with six nearby living quarters and storage facilities. A kitchen, a toilet building and a bath house were located in the vicinity of the personnel shelters. Many of the buildings are still intact and some are being used by the Biology Department of Leiden University.
