Marine Seeziel Batterie Zoutelande

The coastal battery in the dunes midway between Westkapelle and Zoutelande comprised three type M271 artillery casemates (with a gun room and two ammunition magazines in the rear). Fire was directed from a large type S414 fire control post with three observation decks. Ammunition was stored centrally, in a type M145 bunker. The complex included a type M159 hospital bunker. Crews were housed in three type 501 shelters and four type 635 group shelters, the latter a design suited to steep dune inclines. Anti-aircraft defense was provided by three AA-guns installed on type FL242 bunkers. These bunkers had an open roof top gun position and interior crew and ammunition rooms. Additional ammunition was stored in a large type FL246 ammunition bunker. Two type 612 casemates, several machinegun pits, tank guns, mortars and flame throwers provided the perimeter defense. Over the years, the fire control post gradually subsided, slipping off the dune and onto the beach. The Delta Works project spelled the battery’s end: it was demolished.
