Widerstandsnest 143c - The headquarters of the Festung Pionier Stab

Several Atlantic Wall objects are located west of the Brederodeweg, which runs from Bloemendaal to Santpoort. Access is gained via the Brederodelaan, the Zomerzorglaan, and by the Midden-Duin- en Daalseweg or by the Hoge Duin en Daalseweg routes to the Koninginneduinweg.

The dune top “Kopje van Bloemendaal” had long served as a lookout and in 1910, a panoramic table with orientation markers was installed on its summit. The Koninginneduinweg (or Queen’s Dune Road) that provides access to the summit, commemorates the fact that Queen Wilhelmina is said to have climbed to the lookout.  The panoramic table was replaced in 1926 by a monument honoring a local councilman named Koolhoven. This monument had a sturdy pedestal that served as a foundation for a circular WW II German observation post with a loophole for viewing.  Observations from this site were transmitted to a mobile anti-aircraft battery that had been set up on the parking lot of the nearby restaurant “De Uitkijk”. Additional information was gathered from listening posts and searchlight emplacements located on surrounding dune tops. Following the war’s end, the observation post was converted into an observation tower for the general public. On April 25 of 1947, a new plaque was unveiled detailing the history of this dune. The post now commemorates the liberation and offers a commanding view of Haarlem and the North Sea.

The headquarters of the Festung Pionier Stab, the corps of engineers that coordinated the construction of fortifications in this sector of the coast, was located at the foot of the Koninginneduinweg. This command post was housed in a type 610 bunker that is still visible; the door to this bunker with a loophole for delivering flanking fire, can be seen from the road.
